Sistah Songs:
Nine Black Women Who Changed America.
By DeVellus Glover
In Sistah Songs, DeVellus has distilled the lives of "Stagecoach" Mary Fields, Bessie Coleman, Josephine Baker, Billie Holliday, Rosa Parks, Madame C. J. Walker, "Mother" Clara Hale, Angela Davis, and Anita Hill into a single, formative moment when each character, confronted by circumstances which challenged her identity, transcended barriers of color and gender to claim her place as either symbol or role model for future generations of women.
Stageplays presented Sistah Songs in a two-performance workshop Off-Off Broadway several years ago as part of the New Perspectives Theatre's annual Voices From The Edge Festival. The play was extremely well-received. Since that time, the playwright has done some additional work on the script. We are currently in the process of commissioning an original score to accompany the play.
